| Hello! I'm Cecilia Micallef and my love of yoga goes back a long way. I started going to yoga classes in 1988, when I was 21. It didn't take me long to realise that the benefits I was experiencing for my back would be more profound if I practised daily. So, I have had a daily, personal yoga practise since about 1989. Like most people who practise yoga for some time, I've found that the benefits are many! I may have become serious about yoga because of its effects on my back, but I've discovered that yoga touches upon so many other aspects of body and self.
Before teaching yoga I was a primary school teacher and then an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. After I'd been practising yoga for seven years I thought "Well, wouldn't it be wonderful to teach something that I really, really love!" And so I studied yoga teaching through the IYTA (International Yoga Teachers' Association) in 1995 and I've been teaching yoga in Brighton since 1996. I was right. I do really love it! I found the IYTA to offer such a comprehensive course and be such a supportive organisation that I wanted to give something back to them. So at the end of 1996 I became Minutes Secretary for the South Queensland Branch, then Secretary in 1997 and President in 1998. The succession was probably a bit too quick for me, but I wanted to help out in whatever way I could. Then in 1999 I found the perfect excuse to abandon all my Committee responsibilities. I had my first baby, Isaac! Since then, Annika has come along and the two of them keep me very busy. So, at the moment I teach only two classes a week, (Tuesday Morning and Thursday evenings) but as the children get older I plan to teach some more daytime classes as well.
